Apparently, yes. Welcome to the Justice Correctional Center - a court and prison complex located in Leoben, Austria. The monument gained quite a bit of notoreity when the photographs below were being circulated as a part of a Obama smear campaign when he ran for President back in 2008:

Designed by architect Joseph Hohensinn, Austria’s “show-piece prison” was completed in November 2004. The overall design of the prison was based on the two inscriptions located on the prison’s perimeter: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,” which is taken from The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and “Each of the persons deprived of their liberty must be humanely and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human being treated.”

It contains c. 70,000 volumes of the monastery’s entire holdings of c. 200,000 volumes. Akedia: As mentioned below this is the first deadly sin which jumped out at me. Through translation and time this sin has become synonymous with:

Sloth

Idleness

Laziness

Depression

Ennui

Weltschmerz

Anomie

Lethargy

Melancholy

To name just the first few that came to mind last night as I was writing about akedia.

Although the above maybe similar, even symptomatic of, or co-morbid with akedia, the salient features of akedia mark it as a condition unto itself. What these features are and how they affect “treatment” is for another post.

But for now, it is enough to say that I am flirting with akedia.

Brad recommended the above musician to me.

My hesitance to listen to any music recommended to me by anyone is due to many reasons:

Nowadays you hear music everywhere. I am simply too fucking tired to sit down and give anything an honest listening.
People I know tend to identify too fucking much with the media they consume. From clothing, to movies, to books, to music, tv, to sport, it seems what most folks cobble their lives from. They take any kinda serious criticism too damn personally.
98% of the recommendations are just a waste of my time.

Brad doesn’t take himself or his music too damn seriously or at least my opinion of it. Which is good. But his tastes are often way off my chart.

As I have said before of his taste:

The music you listen to sounds like a buncha old niggers hollerin over guitars made from screen doors recorded on an empty tin cans of beans.

To put it colorfully.

Newsom gets labeled “folk” which usually I run away from as fast as possible stabbing my ears out. But she definitely doesn’t not fit into the genre as such. No matter whatever ever adjective they want to hyphenate with folk (freak-folk).

After an uneventful day and quiet night I put her Ys album.

Fucking gorgeous.

Her vocals of course will be compared to Bjork for better and worse, but what is immediately striking are her lyrics. They stand front and center. Unlike a lot of pop music where the lyrics are absolutely the worse part of the shit record companies put out, her lyrics are brilliant.

The complex rhyme structure (not going to get into the technical details) creates complex rhythmic and metrical shifts with her beautiful harp playing. The simplcity and sophistication she gets outta two hands and one voice is remarkable.

A lazy listen to the images she uses paint her immediately into some post-folk, pastoral, flower-child shit box, but a careful listening you can hear subtle and intelligent ironies and surprising twists in sounds, cadence, and cliched expectations.

Highly recommended. Perfect for a stormy night.

The above is the first part of her song Emily. She has no problem abandoning the verse-chorus-verse structure of pop music and breaking the 10 minute length barrier. I’ll post the second part in the next post.
